Question

I have two questions about older pre-Mattel dolls. First, do they get silver eye, or that a post-Mattel thing? I ask, because my new-to-me 1991 Samantha doll looks like she has silver/white flecks in both of her eyes on the right side. The flecks actually go all around the iris, but are most pronounced on the right side. One of my AGT's had silver eye, so I know what it looks like once it is "complete," but I'm worried that what I'm seeing is the beginnings of it or something.

I know the older dolls have different eyes than Mattel dolls, because my 1991 Felicity has black lines all around her irises. I assume they are there to give her eyes depth/sparkle and I wonder if Samantha has light colored lines to have the same effect? Felicity's markings are very even and uniform though and Samantha's seem unbalanced.

Second, has anyone else had a problem with their dolls' coloring? My new-to-me mid-90's Kirsten doll has no color in her lips or cheeks. Seriously, they are almost white they are so totally bland and colorless! All of my other dolls have rosy cheeks and a tint of pink to their lips.

That is how silver eye starts, sadly. It is a pre-Mattel thing.

I also have a colorless Kirsten. I gave her a bit of color myself using art markers and pastels.

    Hope this helps.

Seems like your dolls aren't having much luck! I am not sure about the diference in the Sams, I'm sorry. I have seen the colourless dolls before, it's very strange, but most of those dolls were ones that were very well played with.

I hope your dolls get well!

I have some pre-Mattel dolls and I can tell you that the facial coloring is very faint, if not non-existent. My daughter's new AGT has definite blush and lip coloring whereas the older dolls don't seem to have come with blush and the lip color is more subtle. Actually, the color of the vinyl is different, too. The older dolls have a darkish beige(these are "light-skinned" dolls)and the new one's vinyl looks nice and rosy. I don't if this is because they are old and have faded.

I saw on some one's site that Sam's eyes are liter in her pre mattel days. But I couldn't tell about the ring thing though.

I have a premattel Sam that seems to have hardly any cheek and lip color as well. I got her from a family that had triplet girls...She was purchased back around 95-96. I thought it was because she was very loved, but then I got an older catalog in the mail that I got from a generous board member. The catalog is from ...let's see...1997 and sam looks dead in the pictures...no color hardly...sorta like mine, but then Kirsten looks to have beautiful pink cheeks. So, I am not sure...interested to hear everyones thoughts about this too. I was thinking of trying to add a littl color to her cheeks and lips myself, but not sure how to go about that either. Wish we had a doll's makeup restoration, like we do the hair! Anyway, if I am not brave enough to go through with it myself, I'll probably send her to Gilly Gals if I can.

My Felicity & Samantha dolls are older than the colorless Kirsten and they have nice coloring. Actually, Samantha has fairly dark skin (I think someone else mentioned the skin tone differences)--she looks quite tan, but still has pinkness to the lips and cheeks. My old Felicity has one of the rosiest complexions of any of my dolls. It really looks like they just forgot to paint Kirsten!

I am so sad to hear that Sam probably has silver eye. Since these dolls were my sisters' childhood dolls, I really, really don't want to get new heads for them. I love them despite these flaws!

Re: Gilly Gals. Does she fix frizzy hair also? Kirsten's hair definitely shows previous ownership by a 7 year old qualities!

Why not just see if the eyes can be replaced? I know that Horsemom had some older Addy dolls eyes replaced.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I know! The AGT (Asian features) that my sister gave me also seems to have a little flaw. There are some dark marks in the vinyl of her face (reminds me of something that happened to some of my Cabbage Patch dolls as a kid). I will love them all anyway! I am not going to go the new head route with Sam, since she was my sister's childhood doll, so I guess I will have to adapt to her with silver eyes

Speaking of silver eye, I have one of my AGT's out today and one of her eyes appears to have a slight rim of silver too (possibly my paranoid imagination). Ironically, she already has a new head, because she had silver eye once already (same eye!). Ack! Everyone is falling apart!

Poor Em! I hope it's paranoia and not true silver eye.

Regarding the coloring, the earliest dolls (Sam, Kirsten & Molly) had very nice but subtle coloring in their faces. I'm thinking especially of those made by Gotz, who made the first thousand of each of these three AGs. My personal theory is that all the white-bodied dolls were made by Gotz because they were still using white muslin for their dolls through 1995.

After the initial dolls made by Gotz, there were several generations of AGs still made in Germany but not by Gotz. Based on the dolls I bought, the coloring on dolls made between 1992 and 1995 got fainter and fainter so that by 1995, the dolls looked like they had no paint on their faces at all. It didn't bother me until the AGT "D" generation came out with much brighter coloring. Then I used acryllics to brighten up some of my girls' faces, too, but I've left my early 90's girls as they came.
